Home › Knowledge Base › Excavator Display Goes Black Then Comes Back? Don't Buy a New Screen — It's Usually the Main Relay or Ground
Short answer: Intermittent power loss, blackouts, self-healing stalls — 90% come from burnt main-relay contacts, oxidized/loose ground straps, or a worn ignition switch. All cheap. Displays and controllers almost never fail this way, so don't order big parts yet.

Self-check the three usual suspects

Root causeTypical signHow to test
Main relay contacts burntPower drops over bumps, recovers when coolFeel for heat; fastest is swapping with an identical relay
Ground strap oxidized/looseWorse after rain or washing, flickers under loadFind the ground bus (usually near the battery), tighten and abrade the contact face
Ignition switch wornCuts out at a certain key angleWith the engine running, gently wiggle the key — if it cuts, case closed

Why "intermittent" is actually good news

What to send when quoting

Appendix: 4 ways to get the exact part right the first time

MethodWhat you provideResult
1. Part number (fastest)The part number / VOE number / CAT number — nothing else neededStock and price confirmed within minutes; 100% precise
2. Model + serial number + yeare.g. EC210B + machine serial + year 2015The same model can have several versions — the serial number pins it down
3. Photo of nameplate / old partA clear photo of the machine nameplate, or the printed/stamped number on the old partWe verify fitment from the photo — our responsibility, not yours
4. Fault description + replacement historyBriefly describe the symptom and whether/when this part was replaced beforeWe help judge what to replace — and whether a root cause is still hiding

Send any one of the four to our online chat to lock in the right part. The more you share, the faster and more accurate the quote.

Frequently asked questions

How does the relay-swap test work?

Find an identical relay (horn and glow circuits usually carry one), swap it — if the fault follows the relay, it's the relay; if not, it's the grounds or switch.

Where is the ground bus?

Usually on body studs near the battery negative; excavators often have several — follow the negative cable and tighten/clean each one.

Anything tricky about relays?

Amperage, pin pattern and contact type (NO/NC) must all match — photograph the number and pin layout and we ship the exact one.
